Install Windows 7 (64 bit) on HP 530 Notebook
Windows Versions
When Windows Vista became pre-release I immediately installed it because of the stories that we heard about it. We all remember that Microsoft says a lot about Windows Vista, so that we believed it will satisfy all our dreams.
But I couldn’t use it more than one month!! I realized that Windows Vista is not stable, beside that it used a lot of RAM comparing to Windows XP, so I felt that I was stupid because I believed Microsoft trivialities about Windows Vista. From that day I stuck with Windows XP and refuse even thinking about changing it!
Now a days, Windows 7 become pre-release and many people (includes IT professionals) says that Windows 7 is the best ever Windows, they always repeat that Windows 7 is the soul of Windows XP with Windows Vista style. So after I heard this story from a lot of my friends I finally decide to try Windows 7
Preparing to Install
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) on my HP 530 Notebook ( buy cheap hp 530 battery, compatible with hp 510 battery ), and realized a lot of people in forums tried to do that on almost the same laptop, so I deiced to add this post to be a step by step tutorial about installing Windows 7 and almost all programs you need on it.
First step is to create a new partition (if you want to install Windows 7 and keep your old Windows like me) or make sure that you don’t need any files from your old windows drive.
The question here is how much the drive should be? well I recommend that the drive should be at least 25 GB, so that you can Install Windows 7 Ultimate (or what ever version you want) and all your favorite programs on the same drive.
The last question you might ask is what about drives? should I download any? well, my notebook came with FreeDOS so I have no driver at all! and HP provides only drivers for Windows XP and Windows Vista on here website. The answer is so simple: you almost will not need to install any driver manually, so lets begin the installation process.
You are now ready to install Windows 7 so shutdown your laptop to boot from Windows 7 DVD (I tried to install Windows 7 from inside Windows XP but it didn’t work). DO NOT press the hibernate option! (like I did) if you want Windows 7 to add a multi-boot option for you, you must shutdown your computer.
Installation
When I installed Windows XP on my notebook I fell into the problem of SATA hard disks and forced to disable SATA option from BOIS to let Windows XP recognized my hard, so it remains disabled while I installed Windows 7 (I don’t believe that you will have this problem, but just in case).
Now boot from Windows 7 DVD and follow the installation steps, it is really a simple installation and you will face only 2 or 3 windows before waiting about 10 minutes to your first reboot.
After that you will enter your computer name, use account and something like that. Here you are! welcome to Windows 7 world!
You can notice from you computer properties that you have only 30 days trial, well now Windows 7 is still pre-release so I went to Microsoft site and got a key from here, so my Windows is Genuine now.
Drivers
Now open Device Manager and let’s see what we have, you will notice that Windows 7 installed driver for your Sound Device, Modem and Wireless Network Adapter. But you still have 2 yellow icons named “Ethernet Controller” and “Unknown Device”.
As you expect “Ethernet Controller” is your Network Adapter but don’t worry because Windows 7 can recognize it! All you need is right click on it and choose “Update Driver” option and tell Windows that you will install the driver manually then choose Vendor “Intel” and device that named “Intel PRO/100 Network Controller” (or what ever your network card is) and let Windows install the driver for you.
Now what about “Unknown Device”? after some search I found it, it is HP Quick Launch Buttons. You can now check that your launch buttons is working fine except that you see nothing when you use them (you are not seeing any thing when you darken or brighten your screen for example). So you need to install a driver only if you want to see something when you use your launch buttons, I found a lot of drivers for HP Quick Launch Buttons on the internet but no one works with Windows 7 (64 bit). Finally I found this one which worked perfectly.
You still have one drive that could be better, yes it is Display Driver. All you need is going to “Windows Update” from “Control Panel” and let Windows check for updates, you will see about 4 updates related to your drivers and one of them will install a Nvidia Driver for you (about 16 MB). DO NOT INSTALL the update related to the modem driver, because after I installed it I got a blue screen every time I connect to the Internet with a dial up connection until I uninstalled that update.
So you are now using Windows 7 and you manually downloaded only one driver (Even though you don’t really need it!).
Programs
I can say that I did not have any problem while installing my favorite programs and here is some of them:
Firefox
I can’t find 64 bit of Firefox even there is a version for another browser derived from it, so I installed the 32 bit of Firefox as usual and it works fine with all my favorite addons.
Java
After a lot of searching about JDK for 64 bit (not just JRE), I installed 64 bit version of JDK 1.6 from here.
You will realize after installing JDK 64 bit that it has no Java plugin for browsers, so you must download it your self and install it separately (you will need a file named jre-6u16-windows-i586-s.exe).
TortoiseSVN
I installed TortoiseSVN 64 bit from tortoisesvn.net website.
Windows Sidebar
I love Vista Windows sidebar and I had a fix to install it on my old Windows XP, so on Windows 7 I searched about it and found that Windows 7 don’t have a Sidebar that can be stuck to the right of my screen as with Windows Vista, all it has is a capability to show the gadgets on my desktop and that is not what I want. So after some search I found this fix that fixed my Windows Sidebar and let me enjoy Vista Sidebar program on my Windows 7.
That is the most important programs I used to use, and all of them is just working fine on Windows 7
Conclusion
After I used Windows 7 for about 2 weeks until now, I can tell you that Windows 7 is more stable than Windows Vista, although it uses less memory. Beside that it has a great graphics effects especially when you use Aero theme.
Now I see that I was wrong when I decided to install Windows 7 and kept Windows XP, because I can tell you that you will never boot to Windows XP if you have Windows 7 installed on you PC.

Toshiba Satellite A105 battery charging problem
Today I got Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 for repair with the battery charging problem. It is a new model and we do not have a lot of experience with these laptops. The customer complained that the laptop will not charge the toshiba laptop battery when it is plugged into the AC outlet.
The laptop failure symptoms:
The laptop will not turn on when I try to start it from the toshiba saltellite a105 battery. When the laptop is turned off and plugged into the AC outlet the toshiba battery charge LED doesn’t light up. I know that the battery is not charged and the LED should light up when I plug the laptop into the AC outlet. The laptop starts fine when it is plugged. When I move the mouse over the Toshiba Power Icon in the lower right corner, the balloon will pop up and there is a line in there: Battery Remaining: N/A.
The problem repair procedure:
You can easily fix the problem just by updating the BIOS. Toshiba says that the BIOS version should be at least v1.30. So, go to Toshiba website and click on Downloads. Select your laptop model and find any downloads for the BIOS. In the BIOS change history you will see the description of changes.
After I updated the BIOS, the battery charging problem disappeared.

How to remove or install Apple Macbook Pro memory
Summary
Learn how to correctly remove or install memory into a MacBook Pro.
Warning:The internal components of your MacBook Pro can be warm. If you have been using your MacBook Pro, wait ten minutes after shutting down the computer to let the internal components cool before continuing.
Memory specifications:
Your computer has two memory slots that you can access by removing the battery and bottom case. Your MacBook Pro comes with a minimum of 2 gigabytes (GB) of 1066 MHz Double Data Rate (DDR3) Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) installed. Each memory slot can accept an SDRAM module that meets the following specifications:
- Double Data Rate Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (DDR3) format
- 30mm (1.18 inch)
- 1 GB or 2 GB
- 204-pin
- PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz type RAM
You can add two 2 GB memory modules for a maximum of 4 GB of memory. For best performance, fill both memory slots and install an identical memory module in each slot.
Removing or Installing memory:
Step 1: Remove the access door
- Shut down your MacBook Pro. Disconnect the power adapter, Ethernet cable, security lock, and any other cords connected to the MacBook Pro to prevent damaging the computer.
- Turn over your MacBook Pro and locate the latch. Push down to release the latch and remove the access door that covers the battery and hard drive.
- The latch must be in its released, open position to remove the access door.

Step 2: Remove the battery
With the latch still in its open position, gently pull up on the tab to remove the apple macbook pro 15 battery ( A1175 ).

Step 3: Remove the bottom case
- Remove the eight (8) screws that secure the bottom case of your MacBook Pro, and then remove the bottom case. Important: Because the screws are different lengths, note the screw lengths and locations so you can replace the screws correctly. Put them aside in a safe place.

Touch a metal surface inside the computer to discharge any static electricity from your body.

Step 4: Remove existing memory (if present)
- Push out the ejection levers on the sides of the memory module to release the module from the memory card slot. The memory pops up at an angle. Before removing it, make sure you can see the half-circle notches. If you don’t, try pressing the ejection levers again.
- Hold the memory module by the notches and remove it from the slot.
- Remove the other memory module.
Important: Hold the memory modules by their edges; do not touch the gold connectors.

Step 5: Install memory
- Align the notch on the gold edge of the module with the notch in the lower memory slot.
- Tilt the card and push the memory into the slot.
- Use two fingers with firm, even pressure to push down on the memory module. You should hear a click when the memory is inserted correctly.
- Repeat, if necessary, to install an additional memory module in the top slot. Press down on the module to make sure it is level.
Note: Make sure your memory is installed according to the illustration below, with the gold contacts inserted almost completely into the connector.

Step 6: Replace the bottom case
Replace the bottom case. Replace and tighten the eight screws.

Step 7: Replace the battery
To replace the apple macbook pro 15 battery, make sure the latch is in its open position. Hold the battery at an angle and slide the lipped edge of the battery below the brackets on the outside edge of the apple battery bay. Gently press the battery down.
Step 8: Replace the access door
With the latch in the open position replace the access door, making sure it is level with the bottom case of your MacBook Pro, and press the latch into the closed position.

Battery
I have the 9-cell ibm battery with the T60 being reviewed. It adds a bit of weight over the standard 6-cell thinkpad t60 battery and sticks out but if you want close to 4 hours of battery life with the 15″ screen model you’ll need this size. In using the T60 without Wi-Fi and at medium brightness (3rd notch of 7) it got 3 hours 42 minutes of battery life when used lightly (typing review, or idling). You can expect to get over 3 hours with Wi-Fi on and finishing a DVD with the 9-cell ibm thinkpad t60 battery shouldn’t be a problem, well, unless it’s Lord of the Rings.
The T60 14″ screen size will do much better in terms of time of battery life per cell because a smaller screen just drains less battery. My guess is the 6-cell battery for the T60 14″ will get you about what the 9-cell battery does for the 15″ — again, that’s just a mildly educated guess.

Dell Vostro 1000 Review & Battery Specs
The Dell Vostro 1000 is the budget offering in the Dell Small Business lineup of laptops. It has a 15.4′ screen and comes with an AMD Turion processor. The Dell Vostro 1000 is priced at under $500 with a basic configuration, so the price really can’t be complained about. But does the low price equate to a cheap product or is this laptop a great deal for the buck? This review will attempt to answer that.
Specs of Vostro 1000 under review:
- Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ 1.80GHz
- 15.4′ Widescreen XGA (non-glare)
- 512MB of RAM at 533MHz
- ATI Radeon Express 1150
- 60GB 5400RPM HD
- Windows XP Home
- Dell Wireless 1390 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi
- 24X CD Burner DVD Combo
Dell Vostro 1000 Battery
There are three battery options for the Dell Vostro 1000: 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell. I purchased the cheapest option 4-cell 29WHr dell vostro 1000 battery. I regret this because the 6-cell is only about a $20 upgrade and would have provided far better laptop battery life. With brightness set to half way and wireless on and the system idling, the battery on the Vostro 1000 conked out after 1hour and 50 minutes. If you’re actually working on the notebook you can expect about 1h 30m of battery life. If you’re watching a movie with the screen at full brightness you’ll be lucky to get an hour of battery life out of the 4-cell.
I understand that the 6-cell dell vostro 1000 battery provides almost 3 hours of battery life under normal usage, so I’d go with that option. The 6-cell will be slightly heavier, but that’s a worthwhile trade off for the longer dell laptop battery life.
