Dell Vostro 1000 Review & Battery Specs

The Dell Vostro 1000 is the budget offering in the Dell Small Business lineup of laptops. It has a 15.4′ screen and comes with an AMD Turion processor. The Dell Vostro 1000 is priced at under $500 with a basic configuration, so the price really can’t be complained about. But does the low price equate to a cheap product or is this laptop a great deal for the buck? This review will attempt to answer that.

Specs of Vostro 1000 under review:

  • Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ 1.80GHz
  • 15.4′ Widescreen XGA (non-glare)
  • 512MB of RAM at 533MHz
  • ATI Radeon Express 1150
  • 60GB 5400RPM HD
  • Windows XP Home
  • Dell Wireless 1390 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi
  • 24X CD Burner DVD Combo

Dell Vostro 1000 Battery

There are three battery options for the Dell Vostro 1000: 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell. I purchased the cheapest option 4-cell 29WHr dell vostro 1000 battery. I regret this because the 6-cell is only about a $20 upgrade and would have provided far better laptop battery life. With brightness set to half way and wireless on and the system idling, the battery on the Vostro 1000 conked out after 1hour and 50 minutes. If you’re actually working on the notebook you can expect about 1h 30m of battery life. If you’re watching a movie with the screen at full brightness you’ll be lucky to get an hour of battery life out of the 4-cell.

I understand that the 6-cell dell vostro 1000 battery provides almost 3 hours of battery life under normal usage, so I’d go with that option. The 6-cell will be slightly heavier, but that’s a worthwhile trade off for the longer dell laptop battery life.

    HP Pavilion DV6000 & Battery & DV6000 Charger

    HP Pavilion DV6000 Review

HP’s Pavilion dv6000 series of laptop computers are geared towards multimedia enthusiasts who don’t want to sacrifice performance away from their desktop. Available with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, this laptop family offers excellent power in a reasonably-priced package.

The Pavilion ships with an Intel Core 2 Duo, with processing cores on a single chip, so they’re great for multitasking and handling intensive tasks. They’re both 64-bit processors, so they’re well-suited for the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system installed on these laptop computers. HP packs these laptop computers with a healthy 1GB of DDR2 memory, enough to run Vista without stuttering.

There’s a built-in Webcam and microphone for videoconferencing and Web chatting without the need for any additional equipment. And the 15.4-inch widescreen display delivers a large and sharp image for watching movies or having multiple applications open in tiered view. There’s even a remote control that lets you control movie watching or music listening from a distance–and it fits snugly into the Express Card/54 slot when you’re on the go.

Storage is quite robust thanks to a 160GB 5,400rpm hard drive. The drive spins at a faster speed than you often find on a laptop computer, so reading and writing data won’t be a major performance bottleneck. The 8X DVD writer burns both CDs and DVDs including Dual Layer DVD-R media which lets you store up to four hours of video (or 8.5GB of data on a single disk). And it’s a LightScribe-enabled writer, which means you can etch professional-looking labels on the surface of compatible CDs and DVDs. The labels are monochromatic and the media’s a bit more expensive, but it beats using markers or stickers to label your disks.

There are plenty of connectivity ports on these laptop computers as well. You get three USB ports and a Firewire port for hooking up high-speed peripherals as well as a 5-in-1 media card reader for transferring files and photos from your PDA or digital camera.

As with most laptop computers, the integrated graphics share video memory with the main system RAM, so these portables won’t be the best gaming machines. The AMD models offer NVIDIA GeForce GO 6150 graphics over Intel graphics, so you’ll get some gaming performance boost, but video memory is still shared.
In addition to a modem and network interface, these laptop computers feature 802.11b/g wireless so you’ll be able to find an Internet connection almost anywhere.

At just over six pounds, these laptop computers are more desktop replacement than ultimate portables, but most users will feel the performance benefits outweigh those extra couple of pounds. If you’re looking for great multimedia performance in a moderately priced laptop, the HP Pavilion dv6000 series is a nicely rounded mainstream portable computer.

Dell XPS M1530 VS Apple Macbook Pro

I was in the market to buy a new laptop earlier this year and I came down to comparing to machines: the Dell XPS M1530 ( 9Cell Dell xps m1530 battery ) and the Apple MacBook Pro. I compared both of them to every aspect I could possibly come up with. Anyways both machines recently have received some upgrades so I thought I should update both comparison lists for those of you who might be looking for a new 15-inch notebook.

    xps-m1530-vs-macbook-pro

I gave Apple a point for the Screen since they offer a non-glossy option which I truly prefer due to glare. Dell was expected to push out a LED screen over a month ago, however it hasn’t happened yet. The body of the MacBook Pro is cleaner, simpler, and lighter compared to the XPS 1530. In terms of Operating Systems, if you want OS X Leopard, chances are you won’t be able to get it working on a XPS; however it should a breeze to install Vista/XP on a MacBook Pro with Boot Camp. Leopard can use 4GB of RAM; however you’ll need 64-bit editions of Vista or XP to utilize all of it. Dell offers many more options for HDDs including a 64GB SSD which would be unusual for a 15-inch laptop. Dell also lets you turn your XPS into a Blu-ray player with an optional Blu-ray read/write drive which is great for watching high definition movies. I was irritated to find out that the XPS didn’t have gigabit Ethernet, which is great for transferring large files on a local network, especially when most new laptops have it. Apple won the keyboard war with its beautiful backlit keyboard with an ambient light sensor. However the XPS makes up with a Finger Print Sensor, which is great for bypassing typing passwords when people are around, and a better Web Camera. The XPS comes with a media remote control which tucks away into the express card slot while Apple now charges an additional $20 for their Front Row remote. The XPS M1530 can also be configured with a Sprint or Verizon mobile broadband card which will utilize the laptop’s antennas for better signal gain. I choose the 6-cell battery for the XPS m1530 since it was the best one which didn’t stick out. It offered only 2.5 hours of work time while the MacBook Pro gets about 3 hours.

If you didn’t already notice, there’s one major factor I left out on the chart: price. This part is what made me make my final decision which was to go with the Dell M1530 (dell xps m1530 batteries). Dell offered a pretty good student discount in addition to their constant promotions. Apple also offers such discounts, but are incomparable to what Dell offers. With both configured to the highest similar specifications, the MacBook Pro was getting very close to $3000 while the Dell XPS was about $500 cheaper costing about $2500. In addition for those of you on a strict budget like I was, there’s more flexibility to remove unneeded components with the Dell to bring the price down. Anyways, that’s my two cents so please feel free to make comments.
